Research Credits

Research credits are earned by academics employed at South African universities, who publish research work. For 2008, one publication subsidy unit was R88 000, but changes slightly over time. Every university decides how to divide these subsidy units - CPUT gives 25% to the author(s). The split is as follows:

* 5%: Central Research Fund
* 10%: CPUT Administration
* 20%: Development Fund loan repayment
* 20%: Special Research Reserve Account
* 25%: Researcher/s
* 20%: Faculty/Department

No cash payments are made to researchers, and research credits could be used for research-related activities (conferences, equipment). On retirement, resignation or death, these funds revert to the department/faculty.

The Research Office will allocate a cost code (Rxxx) to every researcher the first time he/she earns credits, and this code must be used whenever funding is requested.

The cycle for research credit allocation is as follows:

1. Year x: Researcher publishes in an accredited source.
2. Year x+1: Researcher claims credits from the DoE through the Research Office (details must normally be submitted around end February).
3. End of Year x+1: the DoE finalises allocations.
4. Year x+2: The DoE pays over the credits to the university via the Research Office, who will credit the Researcher's cost code.
